Wanda Sykes is Out and Proud

Confirming the rumors that have circulated for years, comedian Wanda Sykes announced to a crowd on Saturday that she is a lesbian and was married to her wife on October 25, 2008 in California.

Sykes appeared before a crowd of more than 1,000 rallying outside a gay community center during one of the many protests against Proposition 8 that took place on Saturday. She spoke to her audience of supporters about her personal devastation regarding the passage of the ban and her determination to fight for equal rights. In a humorous but motivational speech Sykes stated, “I am proud to be a woman, I am proud to be a black woman, and I am proud to be gay. I love you all - now let’s go get our damn equal rights!”
