From The CW all the way over to Bravo, girl-on-girl relationships were being explored on television last night. The highly anticipated 90210 Rumer Willis lesbian storyline with Jessica Lowndes, who plays main character “Adrianna” finally kicked off with a friendship and a kiss and Patti Stanger, the “Millionaire Matchmaker,” helped a female client explore her bi-curiousity in a surprisingly respectful and genuine way.

Rumer Willis, as “Gia,” looked the part of a rich lesbian high school student in recovery last night, but unfortunately when she spoke we were reminded that she has some connections in Hollywood. Hopefully as the character and her storyline with Adrianna – who kissed her to help her out in an awkward situation with her ex (Mandy Musgrave!?) – develop, so will Willis’ skills on camera. It would be great to see the relationship between the two last for multiple episodes (the network has promised that it will) but time will tell.

Patti Stanger, on the other hand, did a great job in just one episode of representing the lesbian community. When million-heiress Tricia explained that she was open to dating both men and women Patti didn’t judge or jump right into supporting her client. Instead she made sure that bi-curious Tricia was genuinely emotionally ready and open to dating women – having her meet with a therapist – before she exposed lesbians to dating her. It was a respectable move on Patti’s part because she took her pool of lesbian daters into consideration before presenting them with someone who was truly only into men. Even though Tricia ended up choosing androgynous Tyler as her date, she ultimately realized that she was more on the straight side of the sexuality scale – but just in documenting her short journey to figuring it out Stanger showed all her viewers that it’s really no big deal either way.

Overall, it was a good night for lesbians on TV – far better than last week when Mariska Hargitay crushed us with her rejection of Kathy Griffin’s lesbian advances.

Cut to 2010: Wolfe is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a legacy of acquiring and distributing more than 300 films.

“Wolfe’s vision 25 years ago was that gay and lesbian people would be empowered if they could see positive images of themselves in the media,” says Founder/CEO Kathy Wolfe. “As a result, Wolfe has been in the business of creating change through major retailers for a quarter century.”

Wolfe’s library distributes the most renowned gay and lesbian movies and series of all time, including Desert Hearts, Big Eden, Loving Annabelle and The Undertow (Contracorriente), which won the 2010 Sundance Audience Award.

“You have to remember what gay and lesbian entertainment looked like 25 years ago — essentially closeted — to get an idea of just how far the industry has come. Wolfe was one of our earliest pioneers,” explains actress/comedian Lily Tomlin, whose film, The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, was one of Wolfe’s first mainstream crossovers. “I’m eager to see what Wolfe will bring us next.”

In celebration, Wolfe is hosting a “$25,000 Wolfe DVD Giveaway Contest.” Every month in 2010, WolfeVideo.com awards two contest entrants a Wolfe Gay and Lesbian DVD Library.

Twenty-five cities will honor Wolfe for its contribution to gay and lesbian film at the country’s largest film festivals and gay and lesbian galas. Upcoming Awards include Cinequest in Wolfe’s hometown of San Jose, The Gala for the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco and the Miami LGBT Film Festival. Visit WolfeVideo.com for cities and dates.

Wolfe is independently owned and located in San Jose, California, the center of innovation and the country’s most successful start-ups. Located outside of film-centric LA, Wolfe is part of the “Hollywood of Northern California,” alongside companies like Netflix, Pixar, Apple and LucasFilm.

Lesbians are so lucky. Sure, it may still be hard for us to find adequate representation in television and film, but that really hasn’t stopped our vast pool of talented writers, directors, producers, and actresses from consistently bringing us quality entertainment. We are a community that decided to ignore the mainstream decision makers and forge ahead in the world of storytelling on film. The webseries has become the tool by which determined and skilled artists are sharing their work with those who appreciate it the most. And as the webseries format grows more and more popular, the quality of the productions utilizing it seems to increase as well. “The Real Girl’s Guide to Everything Else,” for example, is so well executed that as the viewer you find yourself forgetting that the screen you are in front of is connected to a computer. Written, created, and produced by Carmen Elena Mitchell (who also plays one of the leads), the series centers around Rasha (Robin Daléa) – “a journalist, nearly dropped by her agent because her work is too smart, political, lesbian and feminist, [who] goes undercover as a glitter-wearing, shoe-obsessed, Cosmo-drinking straight girl.” It’s intellectual, witty, creative, and unique. Four episodes have aired so far and the fandom of the series is increasing fast due to terrific acting, directing, writing… it’s all just very good. With Rasha currently risking her marriage to girlfriend Liz to investigate the history and lives of women in Afghanistan, we caught up with the woman behind her (Mitchell) to learn more about this exciting new addition to lesbian programming.

Cherry Grrl (CG): First of all, love the series. It’s smart and funny and refreshing. How and when did you come up with the idea for the story?

Carmen Elena Mitchell: The idea came out my growing frustration with a lot of mainstream television shows and films marketed towards women. I felt like I wasn’t seeing myself in these movies. I wasn’t seeing my friends. I wasn’t hearing our conversations. Why was everything about chasing unavailable men and pining over expensive footwear? Where were the conversations about politics, books, art, and our careers? Why was there always this prevailing refrain that “every little girl dreams about the perfect wedding day”? Not only is it assumed that every little girl is straight, but it is assumed that this is a perfectly acceptable life-goal. And while I’m not anti-fashion, anti-relationship, or anti-girly-girl, I feel like there’s so much more to explore in women’s lives.

CG: There are a lot of obvious references to Sex and the City. Were you a fan of the show/movie?

Carmen: Sex and the City has become this iconic entity (you can even take an online quiz to find out which character you are!), so what I was really trying to address is what SATC has been made into by our culture and how it has become a bible for single-straight girl-dom. In terms of the series itself, I have a lot of conflicting feelings. On the one hand, I think it was a really smart and interesting show about women in an age group that has been traditionally overlooked by studios. I loved that the women’s sexual proclivities we’re not seen as “sluttiness” or pathological in any way. I loved when the writers took on issues like cancer and when Samantha snagged herself a girlfriend for a few episodes. On the other hand the show mostly centered around wealthy white straight women whose friendships seemed to grow out of bonding over men and shopping. And then the movie version came out, which I felt lacked some of the substance of the series and felt like a fashion show with a little bit of story thrown in for fun. I saw the movie with one of my producers, Reena Dutt (Sydney), and my friend Vivian Rogers (who inspired the character of Vanna). Both of them pointed out that while Jennifer Hudson’s character appeared to be an attempt at diversifying the rich-white-girl world, the way she was written (as the low-income fashionista who rents her designer handbags by the week) fell into some unfortunate stereotyping.

CG: What were you looking for in your lead character, Rasha, when casting?

Carmen: Rasha, in many ways, is me… or maybe the kind of woman I aspire to be. She’s an activist and writer on a mission, but one who stumbles all the time (both literally and figuratively) and often finds herself in bizarre situations borne out of her own insatiable curiosity. I had a very specific vision in my head when I wrote her: soft butch, unintentionally sexy, a feminist with a capital “F.” I’m the daughter of two university professors and grew up surrounded by brilliant women who were always talking politics and taking me to protest marches. My mom’s crowd wasn’t really into “spa-dates” or shopping. So, in a way, Rasha was inspired by them as well and by so many of the women I know and admire but who I wasn’t seeing in mainstream TV and film (or at least not in starring roles). The thing that I loved about Robin [Dalea] was that she brought this fierce intelligence and passion to the role. She loved the fact that Rasha was a strong and unconventional leading lady. Like Rasha, the integrity of the stories Robin tells as an actor are really important to her.

CG: The Lebanese/lesbian thing is great. Does Robin Daléa truly fit both of those descriptions?

Carmen: The answer is no and no…though we’re working on her (for the latter at least!). The truth is I had no idea about the answer to either of those questions when Robin auditioned for us, and when she left the audition room I didn’t care and I didn’t ask, I just thought… “wow, I think we found Rasha!”

CG: Four episodes in we have really only seen into Rasha’s personal life. Are any of the other 3 characters lesbians?

Carmen: The other three are “straight identified”…but that’s something that’s going to evolve in the next season. Sydney is what I would call an “aspiring lesbian,” where as Angie is still stuck in kind of an eighth grade boy-crazy fantasy world and hasn’t really explored her sexuality fully, and is probably a bit closeted. Vanna is fairly straight…but as a die-hard fashionista she doesn’t like to be left out of anything that might be “trendy.” I’m working with the idea that sexuality is fluid thing. So while all the women exist somewhere on the spectrum between gay and straight, how they identify themselves is a function of living in a society where we are encouraged to “choose” an identity. We’ll definitely see more of this (and get to know Angie, Vanna, and Sydney a bit better) in Season 2.

Pro-equality laws went into effect in D.C. and Mexico City last week and a bill that would repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was introduced in the U.S. Senate. It’s all that and more in a week of lesbian news…

D.C. Law Permitting Same-Sex Marriages Takes Effect. The nation’s capital became the sixth U.S. jurisdiction to permit same-sex couples to marry on Wednesday (3/3/10). “This law is an important step towards equal dignity, equal respect and equal rights for all residents of our nation’s capital,” said Human Rights Campaign (HRC) President Joe Solmonese in a press release issued by his organization. “Starting today, same-sex couples in D.C. will be able to enjoy all the rights and responsibilities that come with civil marriage. At the same time, the law also preserves the right of clergy and congregations to adhere to their faith traditions. Today represents a hard-fought victory for D.C. residents and a poignant reminder – here in the home of our federal government and most cherished national monuments – of the historic progress being made towards ensuring equality for all across the nation.” As same-sex couples began applying for marriage licenses, however, groups began demonstrating in opposition to the new law but found themselves being outdone by pro-LGBT clergy at the D.C. courthouse. Activists and supportive clergy joined together outside of the courthouse to sing “This Little Light of Mine” to drown out anti-gay protesters. Video can be found on the HRC blog at HRCBackstory.org.

Gay Marriage and Adoption in Mexico City Begins. Thursday (3/4/10) was the first day that same-sex couples were able to marry and adopt in Mexico City. http://www.cherrygrrl.com/mexico-city-passes-marriage-equality/ Mexico City became the first Latin American city to pass a marriage equality bill in December 2009. However, despite this milestone, activists in pro-LGBT groups in Mexico worry that the new law will be challenged.

Bill That Would Repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Introduced. On Wednesday (3/3/10), Senator Joseph Lieberman introduced the Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2010 in the U.S. Senate. The bill would repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) law, which prohibits lesbians and gays from serving openly in the U.S. Armed Forces. Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA), an Iraq War veteran and a former paratrooper in the U.S. Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division, is the lead sponsor of similar legislation in the U.S House of Representatives. As the HRC pointed out in their press release in response to the news, “Military leaders, including Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen, recognize that DADT is a failed law and support its repeal. Former Vice President and Defense Secretary Dick Cheney also recently came out for repeal by stating, ‘When the chiefs come forward and say, ‘We think we can do it,’ then it strikes me as it’s time to reconsider the policy, and I think Adm. Mullen said that.’ Moreover, former supports of the law, such as General Colin Powell, former Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and General John M. Shalikashvili, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have all indicated their support for repealing DADT as well.”

Openly Gay Speaker Sworn In. State lawmaker John Perez was sworn in as the speaker of the California assembly on Monday (3/1/10). Perez became the first openly gay man to lead either house of the California Legislature.

Update From Uganda. The HRC reported last week that activists protesting the Ugandan anti-homosexuality bill have now collected over 500,000 signatures demanding that the bill be rejected. The petition was delivered to the parliament on Monday (3/1/10) and lawmakers are expected to debate the bill later this month.

The Cyprus Mail reported last week that the Cypriot Government is planning to discuss legalizing gay weddings for same-sex couples across the island, which is located in the Eastern Mediterranean. Should same-sex marriage become legal in the popular vacation spot, it would be major move toward equality for the country and boost to their travel industry, as foreign couples would likely start to visit the island to get married.

Danny Waine, Marketing Director of UK-based travel company Perfect Gay Honeymoons, is particularly excited about the news, which came via an announcement from Cyprus Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Lazaros Savvides. “From a tourism point of view this could be the most positive regulatory change that the island could make this century,” Waine stated. “The most important thing is that this proposed change has come about because of a letter written by a Cypriot Citizen, not a government being forced into it just to generate cash.”

Perfect Gay Honeymoons has been organizing Civil Partnerships abroad for British couples across the world since the Civil Partnership Act became law in the UK in December 2005. The company supports the move from the Cyprus Interior Ministry to explore legalizing gay marriage on the Island. Waine explained, “We have been organizing commitment ceremonies in Cyprus since the Civil Partnership Act came into force, and are receiving increasing inquiries from gay and lesbian couples wanting to marry legally on the island. They’ve often been to friend’s weddings in Cyprus or heard about someone that’s married on the island and that’s what they want too. Gay and lesbian couples don’t want to marry in stereotypical gay haunts like Ibiza, Mykonos and Sitges; they dream about marrying in typical wedding destinations such as Cyprus, Mauritius and the Caribbean.”

Cyprus could cash in on the gay wedding market from the UK, Waine said. “Not only would the marriage law be a step in the right direction for equality of gay and lesbian Cypriot’s, it also could open up a massive market from the UK. Providing the residency requirements for gay weddings remain the same as straight couples, Cyprus would become the only country in Europe where gay and lesbian British couples overseas could legally get married.”

Waine continued: “I strongly urge the ministers and diplomats meeting with Dr. Lazaros Savvides to support the change in the law; as well as for the Cyprus Tourism Organization and hoteliers in Cyprus to get behind the movement. We have written to the Cypriot Government and Cyprus Tourism Organization to offer our support to the proposed change; and we believe that hoteliers across the island would view this amendment favorably. Economically the island of Cyprus only stands to benefit, as it will lead to an inevitable increase in weddings taking place on the island, and generating more group business throughout the year.”

Dr Kai Wacker of GayCyprus.org, the gay tourism information resource based in Limassol, agrees with Waine. “The legalization of gay (same sex marriages) in Cyprus would be something not only the Gay Community of the Republic of Cyprus, but also Cyprus Tourism, the Cyprus Hotel and Catering Industries and many more businesses here in the Republic of Cyprus could profit from enormously. We as a company as well as openly gay individuals and couples would strongly support the legalization of Gay or Same-Sex marriages in the Republic Of Cyprus.”

Waine finished, “Over half of the inquiries we receive for gay weddings abroad are for Cyprus, and these are coming in on a daily basis, so there is certainly the demand there. We have so many gay honeymoon couples travel to Cyprus each year and they always rave about the island, the warmth of its people and standard of hotels. This is an ideal opportunity for Cyprus to bring about change for good, and to offset some of the losses it’s endured during the recession. Ultimately it is the island of love, it has fantastic 5* luxury accommodations, spa and wedding facilities, and this should be open to any couple in love.”

Perfect Gay Honeymoons, a member of the Hays Travel Independence Group, was launched shortly after the introduction of the Civil Partnership Act in December 2005 in the UK, offering a high standard of civil partnership abroad and honeymoon services to gay and lesbian couples. Initially, the company offered same-sex couples the opportunity to book luxury honeymoons and to ensure they receive all the frills a honeymoon couple deserve on their special trip away. The company has since introduced its civil partnerships and commitment ceremonies abroad program with an ever-expanding portfolio of locations.

BY AMBER LEVENTRY

My partner, Amy, is in California for a business trip, and instead of feeling like a bachelor as I eat Honey Nut Cheerios for dinner one night and beer the next, I feel like a single parent. Taking care of our Golden Retriever is getting the best of me. I am able and willing to care for him, but it demands a lot of time. I am responsible for both of his daily walks, his feedings, and playtime. I am the sole provider of discipline, preventing him from eating old food or trash on our walks, and hissing at him when he licks himself to the point of my annoyance. I have been getting up an hour earlier than normal, have yet to put away three loads of laundry, unload the dishwasher, or make the bed since Amy has been gone. I don’t even have the energy for a workout at the end of the day.

Now I realize these are trivial problems to have, but I am spoiled. I have a wonderful teammate in my partner and together we have been caring for Bailey since he was eight weeks old. Seven years ago, we drove two hours to Canada to ‘look’ at puppies; three hundred dollars and a trip through Customs later, and we had our first dog.

Our love for him grows stronger each year, but he is good at testing that love, and I have renewed appreciation for single parents who are able to balance work, pets, and parenthood without wanting to give it all up for a job in Vegas as a blackjack dealer.

Bailey and I have muddled through three days together, both missing the third member of our family, each feeling a little off. And it has been snowing for 24 consecutive hours, dumping 12 inches of new snow. I had heard the storm warning, but I was in denial, not wanting to admit that our Vermont winter still had life in her.

This morning, when I grabbed the newspaper off of the six inches we got overnight, I hoped one of our lovely neighbors would look beyond my Carharts and through the stereotypes of being the masculine lesbian of the couple. I wanted them to ignore all assumptions that I am a strong, capable woman. I wanted one of them to steer their snow blower in my direction and clear our driveway.

Bailey and I geared up and went outside. He in his snow booties and I in the corduroy jacket my partner hates. I’d show her for being in beautiful California while I am stuck in winter’s last grasp!

Bailey grabbed his favorite toy and perched himself on a snow bank to watch me and the neighbors dig out but suddenly remembered that he had to pee and began to cry and bark. He is 80 pounds and stands thigh-high, capable of maneuvering through the snow, but he won’t go to the bathroom if any of it is touching his undercarriage.

I shoveled a path in the backyard for him and got back to work. As I pushed the slushy mess to the end of the driveway, my shovel hit the uneven part of the sidewalk that I have yet to memorize and jammed into my pelvis. This is when Bailey jammed his toy into my ass, ready to play.

“Not now! I’m running late!” I grabbed at the toy, foolishly hoping he would drop it so I could throw it and he would leave me alone for a few minutes.

Bailey has never been the kind of dog who enjoys a healthy game of fetch. He prefers playing tug. But with the arthritis in his back legs, he does little tugging and simply wants you to hold the other end of whatever he has in his mouth, engaged with you in a holding hands sort of way.

“Leave it,” I said to him nicely. He shook his head and bumped me with his snout.

“Leave it?” I implored. He backed up and came at me again. I tugged for a few seconds. That was a mistake. I was trying to ward off his advances; however, he saw this as a sign of playtime.

I held the toy with one hand and tried shoveling with the other. This worked for about 30 seconds. I was tired, late, and a new inch of snow had already covered the spaces I had cleared.

I lost it. “I can’t play right now! Mama has to go to work so she can make the money that pays for your treats!”

He didn’t understand. When I left for work he happily hopped up on the couch and kissed me good-bye. And when I got home, all was forgiven; we were ready for round two. I cleared several inches of snow, took Bailey for a short snowshoe, and got home to see the plow had snowed us in again, leaving the end of the driveway a vague memory of the work I had done an hour before.

I felt defeated. Hungry. And I want to take a long shower and shave my legs. Really shave them, not just a quick, up to the knees shave. So instead of playing with Bailey, trying to make up for ignoring him that morning, I grabbed the shovel and told him we’d play in a minute.

He was patient for about five and then wanted my attention. But he didn’t allow me to go through the routine he had tolerated earlier. Once he knew I was not going to play, he acted out. He sulked to the backyard and, on cue, I followed him and watched him go to the only corner of the yard that wasn’t covered in snow. It’s a spot next to our deck and in the summer when he wants our attention he digs at the mulch there.

“Bailey!” I called hoping he’d come to me. Instead, he looked at me, trotted to the corner, and dug a massive hole. I grabbed his collar and paraded him around the yard, hoping the snow would wash off some of the mud. I toweled him off, but he had so many snowballs stuck to his fur, that all I was doing was pulling his hair. I was tempted to cut them all out, but my partner would have a fit if she came home to a dog with clumps of fur missing from his legs.

I tried breaking them up, but nothing worked. So I gave up and we went inside. Soon I noticed that the snowballs were melting into puddles of mud around the house. I groaned, huffed and puffed, and cleaned up the mess.

And now as I settle in to check my e-mail and get some writing done, Bailey stands next to me and whines. He has to go out again because he continuously ate snow for the two hours we were outside.

I grab my coat, count the hours until Amy comes home, and plan to dig a hole of my own.

Good news for LGBT gamers was released today from Microsoft.

A Letter from Marc Whitten: Update to Xbox LIVE Code of Conduct:

Dear Xbox LIVE members,

Since the beginning, Microsoft has made an investment in the security and safety of Xbox LIVE and created tools and monitoring practices to ensure it is a fun and welcoming entertainment experience for people of all races, nationalities, religions and sexual orientations. And thanks to this investment and the enthusiasm of community members like you, we’re proud to be the strongest and most diverse online community of its kind at 23 million.

The Xbox LIVE Terms of Use and Code of Conduct are designed to create a place where people can safely enjoy all of the ways to interact on our service, be it online multiplayer gaming, photo sharing, Netflix parties, or social games such as 1 vs 100, without fear of discrimination or harassment. As the service evolves and our customers provide us with feedback, these rules evolve to incorporate new features or changes in how people wish to interact.

With that in mind, I’d like to announce an update to the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use and Code of Conduct which will allow our members to more freely express their race, nationality, religion and sexual orientation in Gamertags and profiles. Under our previous policy, some of these expressions of self-identification were not allowed in Gamertags or profiles to prevent the use of these terms as insults or slurs. However we have since heard feedback from our customers that while the spirit of this approach was genuine, it inadvertently excluded a part of our Xbox LIVE community. This update also comes hand-in-hand with increased stringency and enforcement to prevent the misuse of these terms.

I truly believe that our diversity is what makes us strong: diversity in gaming and entertainment options, and diversity in the people that make up this amazing community. I look forward to seeing you on LIVE soon.

Jump in,

Marc Whitten
Gamertag – Notwen
www.twitter.com/notwen

The policy updates reportedly come after a meeting with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney are bringing their multiple award winning Off Broadway play “The Kathy and Mo Show” for a one night only exclusive performance at the Palm Springs Convention Center during Club Skirts The Dinah’s Hollywood Party on Saturday April 3rd.

Reunited in 2005 for their New York Off-Broadway show “Afterbirth” – which sold out its six week limited run before the first performance – Kathy and Mo will exclusively be back on stage together again for the first time in five years at The Dinah. With great insight, wit and compassion, Kathy and Mo bring a feminist perspective to an incredible variety of characters of all ages in a series of satirical sketches.

Also joining the Dinah’sty is actress Sarah Shahi famously known for her portrayal of sexy Latina DJ Carmen on Showtime’s hit drama series The L Word.
Unfortunately, Rosie O’Donnell has canceled her show at The Dinah to remain in Miami with her children over Spring break. From the Dinah team: “We are very disappointed in this decision, and know her Dinah fans will be as well. All Rosie tickets may be transferred to The Kathy and Mo Show. We are also holding an exclusive private meet and greet with The L Word’s favorite character, Sarah Shahi, in which she will autograph complimentary L Word hats and pose for photos with all previous Rosie O’Donnell ticket holders prior to her meet and greet with the general Dinah attendees.”

For Rosie O’Donnell refunds, contact info@thedinah.com.
