Typically, the summer months don’t offer up the highest quality shows – and when it comes to lesbian programming most every season disappoints – but the 2009 summer schedule actually looks pretty exciting. From premium channels to network television, lesbian characters are appearing in all different forms (vampires, models, chefs) and to help you find them, we have put together our Fresh Ten Lesbian TV Picks of the Summer.
10. Top Chef Masters. Wednesdays at 10/9pm on Bravo. Always inclusive of the amazing lesbian chefs of the world, Top Chef will now be featuring one of the most famous and talented of them all when Elizabeth Falkner competes on Top Chef Masters.
9. Mental. Tuesdays at 9/8pm on FOX. In the new medical mystery drama about Dr. Jack Gallagher, “a radically unorthodox psychiatrist who becomes Director of Mental Health Services at a Los Angeles hospital where he takes on patients battling unknown, misunderstood and often misdiagnosed psychiatric conditions,” Marisa Ramirez plays Dr. Chloe, an intern who is also a lesbian.
8. She’s Got The Look. Thursdays at 9/8pm on TV Land. Watch lesbian contestant, Sandy, strut her stuff on the second season of the modeling competition for women over 35. Sandy is described as a striking, funky, single mother of two who hails from New York City and says she feels most beautiful when she tells her kids she loves them. She is also the lead singer/songwriter of the band WhoButShe and likes to “rock out whenever she can.”
7. Nurse Jackie. Mondays at 10:30pm on Showtime. Edie Falco, who stars as Nurse Jackie in the new Showtime series by the same name, has no scheduled lesbian scenes coming up anytime soon but Mombian.com recently reported that veteran actors Swoosie Kurtz and Blythe Danner just might. The website for lesbian moms learned that Dr. Fitch “Coop” Cooper (Peter Facinelli) has lesbian moms!
6. My Life On The D List. Mondays at 10pm on Bravo. She may have kissed Aubrey O’Day during her hosting gig for The A-List Awards but funny lady Kathy Griffin makes this list because of her inclusion of lesbian celebrities (Rosie, Melissa Etheridge, Lilly Tomlin) during the new season of her Emmy award-winning reality show.
5. Weeds. Mondays at 9pm on Showtime. Nancy Botwin, the ridiculous drug-dealing mom played by the brilliant Mary-Louise Parker, is reason enough to watch Weeds this summer but Isabelle Hodes, the lesbian daughter of the even more ridiculous, Celia Hodes, is an extra special little treat.
4. FEED. Fridays on CherryGrrl.com and http://www.feedseries.tv. While it may not technically be on TV, this exciting and original hit series has exploded on the internet and earned a fan following from all over the world. Read more about it here.
3. Guiding Light. Daytime on CBS. The love story of Natalia and Olivia (“Otalia” to their devoted fans) has been developing slowly for months now but things look like they might be heating up this summer. In the most recent episode of the soap the two women admitted that they’re both not afraid to have sex – a very important (yet not often actually vocalized) first step.
2. True Blood. Sundays at 9pm on HBO. HBO’s hit series based on the Sookie Stackhouse book series about the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional small northern Louisiana town, has brought on Evan Rachel Wood for it’s second season as Sophie-Anne – the 400-year-old, “lesbian,” Vampire Queen of Louisiana.
1. Gimme Sugar: Miami. Mondays on Logo. The hot lesbian party girls are back! Gimme Sugar moves from LA to Miami where Charlene, with the success of Truck Stop, takes on her biggest challenge yet.
