Meredith Baxter Comes Out to Today Show

She attended The Dinah in Palm Springs in April and just recently returned from the Sweet Caribbean Cruise, but now Meredith Baxter is letting the mainstream community know that she’s a lesbian and that she has been for the past 7 years. Baxter, 62, despite being anxious, decided to very publicly address the recent tabloid rumors about her and her relationship with Nancy, her girlfriend of four years, this morning on The Today Show. A highlight of the conversation between Baxter and Today Show host Matt Lauer came when she made special note of the fact that for her, coming out is in some ways a political issue. “This is a political act, even though that’s not what it feels like to me,” she said. “If anyone knows someone who’s gay or lesbian … they’re less likely to vote against them to take away their rights. I wrote a novel about a woman coming out late-in-life called Seeking Sara Summers. For these women it isn’t about getting their 15 minutes of fame (a criticism of Meredith Baxter on another site), it’s about getting a life. I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage to simply be who you are.
